Behind the Scenes: The Silent Crossroad – A Virtual Production Journey at The DAVE School

Step aside, green screens—Virtual Production has officially entered the spotlight at The DAVE School. Our students stepped onto the set of “The Silent Crossroad,” a groundbreaking final project directed by Animation Instructor Braden Bunk. But this wasn’t just another class assignment—it was a full-scale production experience, where creativity met technology in real-time.

What is Virtual Production?

Traditionally, filmmakers shot on-location or used green screens, hoping to perfect their vision in post-production. Virtual Production changes the game. It combines live-action footage with digital environments displayed on massive LED walls, powered by Unreal Engine. Directors and actors see the final world as they perform, and our students learned how to bring this method to life. Learn more about DAVE Virtual Production Diploma.

Real-World Experience: Shooting at VU Studios Orlando

The Silent Crossroad wasn’t just a classroom exercise. Our students shot their project at VU Studios Orlando’s Virtual Production Soundstage, an industry-standard facility. But make no mistake—VU was the venue, but The DAVE School was the creative powerhouse behind the production.

Under the guidance of Braden Bunk, students operated as a professional film crew. They managed camera setups, lighting, set design, and even post-production planning. And for a touch of authenticity, they shot with “Lucille,” a 1957 Chevy Bel Air owned by our Career Services Director, Michael Keith. Michael’s dedication to student success didn’t stop there—he was also the one who secured access to the VU Studios soundstage.

The Mandalorian Connection: Our Graduates Making an Impact

If this technology sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same method used in shows like The Mandalorian. In fact, four DAVE School graduates—Brian N. Bentley, Alex Heffner, Yael Majors, and Christopher Montesano—won an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for their work on The Mandalorian. You can read more about their achievement here.

Learning Through Doing

At The DAVE School, our students don’t just learn—they create. “The Silent Crossroad” is a testament to that philosophy. They gained hands-on experience, working in a team, solving real production problems, and bringing their creative visions to life.
